LinkedIn Algorithm Changes in 2024 - What You Need to Know

For text-only posts:

  • 1800-2100 characters is the ideal length

  • 1000+ characters minimum

For text + image posts:

  • 900-1200 characters

  • Authentic custom images lift reach

For video posts:

  • 1:20 is the new sweet spot length

  • Add captions to further boost engagement

Other details:

  • Polls should run for 1 week, not 1 day. Avoid complex niche questions.

  • Asking questions in posts lifts reach 20% and engagement 35%. Open-ended questions that invite comments are key.

  • Tagging over 3 people who don't engage negatively impacts you. Tag strategically.

  • Diversifying content across multiple formats (text, video, documents, polls, etc.) can increase engagement 50%.

  • Replying to comments boosts reach 60%. Stay active in the comments.

Scoring Factors.

Based on the study: Just Connecting Hub

Adding a few more details on what specific metrics factor into your score:

  • 👍 Reactions = +1 point

  • 🔎 Clicks = +2-3 points

  • 🔁 Shares = +7 points

  • 💬 Comments = +12 points

The algorithm manages it in 3 phases:

  • 🌱 Measurement Phase (lasts ~90 minutes)

  • 💨 Growth Phase (lasts ~8 hours)

  • 📈 Stabilization Phase (lasts up to 1-2 weeks)

Let’s walk through what happens to your content in each...

Phase 1️: Measurement (Lasts ~90 Minutes)

During this initial phase, the algorithm analyzes your post and shares it with a small sample of your network. Many things get factored in here like:

  • ↗️ Your post’s clicks, reactions, comments, shares

  • ↗️ Number of tagged people who engaged

  • ↗️ Your overall activity level

  • ↗️ Audience quality

Based on all those signals, your post gets an early score. The higher the score, the more exponential growth you’ll see in the next phase.

Phase 2: Growth (Lasts ~8 Hours)

Over these critical 8 hours, a top-scoring post in Phase 1 will skyrocket in reach and engagement.

Little can be done here except watching your content take off ☝️and replying to comments to extend the lifespan of this growth window.

Phase 3️: Stabilization

If your post makes it through Phase 2 still going strong, it graduates to the stabilization phase.

This is where it plateaus and holds steady in the feeds of your audience for up to 1-2 weeks.

Again, staying active in the comments continues to stretch how long people see the post.

3 Steps to Make ChatGPT Write Like You

A new chat with ChatGPT is a blank slate.

To get what you want, you need to be descriptive.

When it comes to describing tone of voice, we ALL use the same words:

  • 😊 Friendly

  • 🔥 Warm

  • 💬 Conversational

  • 💼 Professional

  • 🤪 Quirky

  • 🎣 Engaging

It's no wonder that we get the same boring results.

It's better to SHOW ChatGPT what you want to sound like, instead of telling it.

Here's how:

1️⃣ Give it examples

Gather examples of pieces of your writing that you like: emails, LinkedIn posts, articles, etc.

If you don't have anything, you can sit and write a paragraph or two and use that instead.

2️⃣ Prompt a ToV guide

Use this prompt:

Act as an extensively experienced copywriter, trained in writing tone of voice guides specifically for ChatGPT. I'm a [insert job title], I [insert job details] and I'm looking for you to write an in-depth tone of voice guide based on examples I'm going to give you.

I want you to focus on the four dimensions of tone of voice:

Humour

Respectfulness

Formality

Enthusiasm

Also analyse the content patterns around sentence structure, word use, perspective, language types, grammar, punctuation and emoji usage.

Remember the aim here is to be able to replicate this tone of voice precisely by using the guide you produce, so be detailed.

I'm going to feed you one piece of content at a time: an email, a LinkedIn post, an article, etc. I'll tell you each time what it is. Please read and analyse each one and ask me for the next one. When I've finished, I'll say "I'm finished" and you can create the guide.

Produce the report in markdown. When you're ready for the first piece, let me know.

Then add a few pieces of content that really worked for you: LinkedIn posts, emails, articles, whatever you've got. Or sit and write a paragraph or two.

3️⃣ Use it in your new prompts

Go and save the resulting guide in a separate doc so you can find it again.

Then, whenever you are next prompting to create content, add this guide into the bottom.

***

Ta-da - maybe not perfect, but content that should sound a lot more like you.

*Replace ChatGPT with any other LLM: Claude, Gemini, Copilot, etc.

Important notes:

💡 Remember the 'context window' - that's how much ChatGPT remembers of your conversation. It's about 2000 words for the free version and about 6500 words for the paid version.

💡 You can get up to about 30,000 words in the ChatGPT Playground, which is the developer version of ChatGPT, with more features to fiddle with.

💡 Not a fan of your own tone of voice? Use extracts from a creator or author you do like as your examples instead.

How to Prompting with Basic Communication Principles

The common misconception about mastering ChatGPT revolves around the need for high-level coding or deep AI knowledge.

However, the true essence of leveraging ChatGPT lies in the art of communication

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜𝗗𝗔 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮.

Attention, Interest, Desire, Action - AIDA isn't just a sequence; it's the journey your reader takes from curiosity to commitment.

It's the formula that captures the wandering eye on LinkedIn and turns it into a focused gaze.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮. 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗦𝗞, 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖, 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗘.

ASK: Answer, Source, Knowledge - it's how you position yourself as the expert.

CREAC: Claim, Reason, Evidence, Analysis, Counterclaim - the structure that turns your argument into an ironclad case.

CREATE: Claim, Reasons, Evidence, Analysis, Tie, Evidence - it's the narrative arc that informs and persuades.

↓ Here’s how you apply them ↓

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝟭:

Use AIDA to write a compelling LinkedIn summary that captures your professional essence and calls to action

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝟮:

ASK yourself what unique value you offer, source it with your achievements, and share that knowledge in a post.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯. 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵.

Your writing should morph to fit the context - be it a job interview, a strategic report, or a product launch on LinkedIn.

Each situation demands a different narrative, a different strategy, and a different part of you.

*️⃣ "Ethos, Pathos, Logos" → the ancient art of persuasion, now in your posts.

*️⃣ "OAR" → Objective, Audience, Research - know these, and your message
hits home every time.

"Ethos, Pathos, Logos" + "OAR" makes your writing not just seen but felt and remembered.

Creating a storytelling post with AI, especially on a platform like LinkedIn, requires a blend of authenticity, engagement, and a clear narrative structure.

Here's a step-by-step guide from @luke Matthews

1️⃣ First, find 10 LinkedIn storytelling posts you like.
(To mimic the tone of voice)

2️⃣ Copy/paste each of the posts into a doc.
↳ use this format: "Post 1:" then paste the post.

3️⃣ Now, go to ChatGPT and use this prompt.
↳ For best results use GPT4.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝟭:

You are an expert ghostwriter that specializes in LinkedIn and Twitter marketing and you have years of business experience. Please analyze the following 10 posts from (𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑓 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒). I want you to give me 2 new posts based on these posts. Please make the posts with the thought leadership of (𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒) and the formatting and copywriting skills of (𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒), with a slight influence from (𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒). I want you to make the sentences short and concise but also switch up the formatting so it's enjoyable to read. Please no hashtags, and please make sure the posts follow this opening format:

A bold statement that is no more than 8 words in sentence one.

A short statement beginning with "How I" and then a number included in this story opening sentence.

Here are the 10 posts to analyze:

(𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 10 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑠 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒)

Our work isn't done.

We need 1 more prompt to get the correct tone of voice.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝟮:

Can you please add the following story into both posts:
